Currently, professional gardeners and homeowners in Curaçao dispose of garden waste at landfills, where it is usually burned. There is a fee and involves a lengthy trip to the landfill. This is also a great waste of valuable resources and nutrients that can be used in the food forests or gardens as a fertilizer.
Garden waste is our treasure
As the saying goes: “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. At Orenda, we aim for circularity by accepting the garden waste of others, and by processing it in our projects.
We have assembled a group of professional gardeners, who participate in our project. Whenever we might need replenishment of garden waste in our projects, we contact the gardeners and arrange the pick-up and delivery of the garden waste.
Mostly, we use the garden waste in a form of mulch to cover the soil. This provides a protective cover for many soil organisms and plant life. We also use thick tree trunks as the basis for fungi and bacteria to procreate in.
Garden waste benefits everyone in Curaçao
Orenda creates a win-win situation by coordinating the logistics between the professional gardeners and the food forests, both profiting from the free biomass. In the near future, Orenda seeks to expand to organic kitchen waste for composting purposes to create another circularity.
Please contact us if you want to donate garden waste or require garden waste for your food forest.
